(A Series of 25)No 22. THE DRUIDS DID NOT
BUILD STONEHENGE.
No one is absolutely sure who did erect these mysterious rings of huge stones on Salisbury Plain. But experts agree that the Druids did not. The Druids came to Britain from Gaul (France) about 600 B.C. Stonehenge was completed at least 700 years before, possibly much earlier. Professor Stuart Piggott. a leading authority, believes that some features of Stonehenge date back to about 1900 B.C. and that the main ring of stones, known as the Sarsen Circle, was built between 1500 and 1300 B.C.
The writer of the Ministry of Works' official guide to the site believes that it was all built at one time, earlier than 1900 B.C. The idea that Stonehenge was built as a Druid's temple was first put forward by John Aubrey (1626-97). It was just a guess.
